Description
A Place for Women is a participatory art performance exploring women’s place in democracy, public space, and collective memory. Through artistic actions, conversations, textiles, photography, and shared presence, the work transforms public space into a temporary democratic forum for dialogue, reflection, and civic participation.
Presented at Järvaveckan – one of Sweden’s largest democratic meeting places, attracting more than 50,000 visitors annually—the performance invited children, youth, families, politicians, civil society organizations, public authorities, and business leaders to reflect on questions of representation, visibility, belonging, and participation in society.
Visitors were encouraged to actively shape the work through collective artistic actions, conversations, photography, and shared decision-making. By giving participants agency within the performance, the project explored how democracy is practiced not only through political institutions but also through listening, participation, and the ability to influence shared spaces.
The performance highlights how collective creativity can strengthen democratic dialogue, foster social cohesion, and increase the visibility of voices that are often underrepresented in public discourse.
